This includes families in the war affected areas of Sri Lanka who have been rebuilding their lives after the devastating impacts of this traumatic period.

The Sanmarga Trust supports families to improve livelihoods by providing interest fee loans and training, helping to increase incomes from their farms or by commencing small businesses. The Inability to secure credit/loans from banks is often the biggest challenge for these families many of whom are small farming families and single parent families with enterprise and determination to improve their livelihoods.

The following case studies from Sanmarga’s Livelihood and Enterprise Programme in the Vavuniya district in collaboration with their partner SEED describe typical examples of the work by the Trust for livelihood support to low income and vulnerable families.

  • Enhancing livelihoods: Moorthy and family

Moorthy and his family live in a small village in Vavuniya district. They were badly affected by the civil war and left with physical impairments, limiting their work on their small farm.

  • Enhancing livelihoods: Jamuna and family

Jamuna is a single mother with three children living on the outskirts of Vavuniya town. She earns a meagre income mainly through ad hoc labouring work. She is enterprising and plans to supplement her income by producing a variety of spice powders and selling them in packets to local shops.
